A complete reference of BetterFlare's features, organised by area. BetterFlare runs on the web at my.betterflare.aero and as a native iOS/Android app — one app for both instructors and students.
Platform
- Web app — my.betterflare.aero, for admins, instructors, and students. Desktop and mobile browser.
- Mobile app — "BetterFlare: Flight Training" on the App Store and Google Play. One app for both instructors and students.
- Offline — the mobile app stores everything on the device and syncs automatically when back online. A sync screen shows failed uploads so nothing is lost.
- Languages — product UI in English; store listings in English and Swedish.
- Security — all traffic over HTTPS. An organisation's data is only visible to its members. Email-first sign-in with "remember me" and password reset by email.
Students and Training Progress
- Every student in the organisation, listed as soon as you sign in.
- Each student page shows the current syllabus, next planned lesson, total hours (dual and solo), landings, and completed exercises.
- Tabs: Overview, Flights (logbook-style table), and Exercises.
- Exercises are colour-coded: completed, in progress, or not started.
- Licence minimums: each syllabus can set minimums (e.g. total time, dual, solo cross-country, solo landings). Every student gets a progress card showing what's still left.
- Call or message a student straight from their profile in the app.
- Instructor overview per student: which instructors have flown with them.
Logging Lessons
- Dual and solo time, landings, and block times (off/on block, take-off/landing). Type four clock times and the block and flight time are calculated for you.
- Engine meter readings.
- Flight categories per flight: cross-country, night, instrument, and more — plus separate landing categories (e.g. night landings).
- Departure and arrival airfield (optional per organisation; the organisation sets a home airfield).
- Tick exercises off as in progress (one tap) or completed (two taps) while you log.
- Weather, written feedback, and homework, with an optional email to the student.
- Attach photos — for example the flight plan or map preparation.
- Planned exercises for the next lesson, shown as a checklist.
GPS Flight Tracks
New in app version 1.0.9.
- Press Start recording on the Log lesson screen before taxiing, fly, press Stop.
- Take-off, landing, flight time, and landings are detected from the track and filled in automatically.
- Recording continues with the screen locked (iPhone). A banner shows a recording is running.
- The track is saved with the lesson and shown on a map — street map and satellite view, full-screen, with airborne time, distance, landings, max altitude, and max groundspeed.
- Works for navigation flights and circuit training alike.
- Switched on per organisation.
Bookings and Scheduling
- Shared calendar per aircraft for school flights, private flights, and maintenance.
- Instructors mark when they're available; students see the free slots.
- Default booking lengths and planned exercises attached to a booking.
- Club members can book school flights themselves (if the organisation allows it).
- Log the lesson straight from the booking — date, aircraft, student, and instructor are prefilled.
- Bookings tab in the mobile app as well as on the web.
- Switched on per organisation.
Push and Email Notifications
- Push notifications (app) and email for new and changed bookings and for logged lessons.
- Each user chooses which channels they want — in the app (Account) or on the web (My account).
Syllabuses
- Ready-made templates: EASA PPL(A), LAPL, ultralight, and EASA Night Rating NQ(A).
- Build your own syllabus or copy and adapt a template.
- Reorder, rename, and add exercises — including on the phone.
- Assign one or more syllabuses to each student.
- The web interface is recommended for detailed syllabus editing.
Student View
- Students sign in with the account their school created for them (they get a welcome email).
- They follow their syllabus, hours, landings, and minimums flight by flight.
- They read the instructor's feedback and see the plan for the next lesson.
- They keep their licences, medicals, and theory test results at hand (Documents tab).
- Available both in the app and on the web.
Documents and Credentials
- Licences, medical certificates, endorsements, and theory test results per student — each with an attached file (photo or PDF) and an expiry date.
- The organisation decides whether students may add their own documents.
- Credentials can be added and edited offline in the app.
Training Records and Archive
- PDF training record per student, generated from the web — lessons, hours, exercises, and credentials.
- Saved in the organisation's archive, where admins can also upload and download other documents.
Reports and Logbook
- Flight reports for the organisation: flights, time, and landings for a chosen period, filtered by aircraft or instructor, with CSV export.
- My logbook: each user's personal logbook, built automatically from the lessons logged, with CSV export.
Aircraft
- Register the organisation's aircraft with documents attached (insurance, airworthiness review, etc.).
- Expired and expiring documents are flagged in the aircraft list.
- Only admins can add, edit, or remove aircraft.
Organisation and Team Management
- Self-service signup: create an organisation, confirm with a 6-digit email code, invite instructors and students. Each person gets a welcome email with their own login.
- Roles: admin, instructor, student.
- Organisation settings: country, time zone, home airfield, which logging fields to use (e.g. block times or departure/arrival).
- One user can belong to several organisations and switch between them on the web.
- Remove members from the organisation.
Integrations
myWebLog
myWebLog is a booking and flight log system used by many Scandinavian flight clubs. BetterFlare integrates with it so that bookings from myWebLog appear in the BetterFlare calendar, and instruction flights logged in myWebLog land in an inbox ready to become lessons with the data prefilled. Member accounts are matched to BetterFlare users. Available as a module per organisation.
